Several months after the release of Cynthia’s latest New York Times best seller it became clear that Cynthia’s philosophy is much more than a book. What started as a weight loss plan soon became a lifestyle for many people across the country, and Cynthia now offers several S.A.S.S! Yourself ℠ services.

S.A.S.S! Yourself  - Nutrition Coaching
Cynthia offers nutrition coaching for healthy adults (no significant past medical history, no existing medical conditions) who are following the plan from her newest book S.A.S.S! Yourself Slim: Conquer Cravings, Drop Pounds and Lose Inches and would like additional personal coaching and support. Coaching does not include a clinical nutrition assessment and is not an option for people with any existing medical conditions that require a customized therapeutic diet, such as thyroid conditions, food allergies or intolerances, high blood pressure, digestive disorders, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. Each coaching session is one hour, and can take place in person, or via phone or Skype.

S.A.S.S! Yourself  - Girlfriend Groups
One of Cynthia's unique services is offering fun, casual, customized workshops to small groups (5-6 people) of friends. If you and your friends are all following the eating plan from Cynthia's book, contact us to schedule a "girlfriend group." These customized groups can include anything from simply picking Cynthia's brain (like a group Q&A) to a cooking demo or class on the S.A.S.S! Yourself ℠ eating plan. Cynthia also offers tailored 4-8 week "girlfriend groups" for friends working toward a similar goal, from losing weight for a special occasion (wedding, vacation, class reunion) to eating right for a race, walk, marathon or other fitness event.

S.A.S.S! Yourself  - Cooking Classes
Whether one-on-one, a small group gathering, food market, or event, Cynthia offers cooking demos that showcase her unique ‘5 piece puzzle’ recipe strategy. In addition to her master’s degrees in both nutrition science and public health Cynthia completed formal culinary training. She personally created and tested each of the 105 flavorful recipes in S.A.S.S! Yourself Slim and is continuously developing new deliciously simple meals that follow her philosophy. Each of Cynthia’s meals combines fixed portions of produce, whole grains, lean protein, plant based fat, and natural seasonings, with an emphasis on natural, organic and in-season ingredients. And because Cynthia is a registered dietitian cooking classes can be customized for special dietary needs, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, allergy free, or other distinct or therapeutic needs.

S.A.S.S! Yourself  - Workshops
Cynthia offers corporate talks and small group workshops that incorporate her philosophies about nutrition and wellness, including: why the obesity rate has skyrocketed; adopting a new approach to weight loss and healthy eating that celebrates food and does not involve counting calories, points or grams; overcoming emotional and socially contagious eating; how to fall in love with being physically active; the connection between our eating patterns and disease risks, and the power of your plate to optimize your physical and emotional health.

The notion that laughter is the best medicine has probably existed for years but the first real proof surfaced in the 1970s when Norman Cousins, a writer and magazine editor of the popular Saturday Review, was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. He believed that if stress could worsen his health, which was known at the time, than laughter could improve it. With the approval of his doctor he tested the theory on himself by prescribing funny videos and his disease went into remission. He wrote a paper about his experience that was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine as well a book, Anatomy of an Illness: A Patient’s Perspective, which became a best seller, and opened our eyes to the connection between laughter and wellness.

If you’ve ever enjoyed barley soup you know how hearty and filing this delicious grain is, and it has quite a history. It’s one of the most ancient grains - Egyptians buried mummies with necklaces made of barley. Today it remains the world's fourth most important cereal crop after wheat, rice, and corn.

Of all the whole grains barley packs the most fiber and it’s rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Natural substances in barley have also been shown to help reduce cholesterol (even more than oats), control blood sugar, and boost immunity by feeding the friendly or “good” bacteria in your digestive tract.

I use the word antioxidants a lot. These little life savers protect your body from head to toe, and have been shown to fend off aging as well as a wide range of diseases, from heart disease and type 2 diabetes to cancer and even obesity. But every once in a while someone stops me and asks, “OK, I know they’re good for you, but just what is an antioxidant anyway?” Great question!

James Corbett is simply the best colorist in New York City and one of my favorite people on the planet. I was referred to James after I walked away from another salon in tears with the exact color I said I didn't want. James fit me in right away (on his birthday no less) and treated me like a longstanding client even though we'd just met. He immediately made me feel comfortable and he gave me the PERFECT color. I've been a devoted fan and client now for over two years and I regularly get compliments on my color - often from other hair stylists! For me and everyone I've referred to James visits to his studio are like visits to a friend's home - between the beautiful, relaxing decor, James' warmth and sense of humor and his adorable dog Diego (who has his own facebook page) you'll want to hang out even after your appointment. I found the perfect salon, stylist and friend in James. He's also an amazing resource for the media. Check out his site here to learn about him and his wonderful new spa, which offers organic manicures, pedicures and facials, acupuncture, yoga and more.

When it comes to getting enough sleep, I have to admit I struggle with my goal of getting eight hours a night. And according to the National Sleep Foundation, I’m in the majority – over 60% of Americans miss the mark. But I’m fully aware that making sleep a priority is one of the most important things I can do for my health, and I encourage my clients to do the same.

Nutrition is magical. You know that phrase, “You are what you eat” – well it’s literally true. Nutrients from the foods you eat food are the foundation of the structure, function, and integrity of every little cell in your body, from your skin and hair to your muscles, bones, digestive and immune systems. You may not feel it, but you’re constantly repairing, healing and rebuilding your body. Here’s how it works and why what you put on your plate is so important:

It’s pear season, which in my opinion is one of the bright spots of the chilly season. Right now my local market is overflowing with pears of all shapes, colors, and sizes, and I’m happy to report they’re all amazingly good for you. This member of the rose family is a great source of dietary fiber, which is one of the reasons eating pears can prevent you from becoming pear-shaped (a higher fiber intake is tied to less belly fat)! In fact, roughly (no pun intended) 20% of the carbs in a pear come from dietary fiber – about 5-6 grams for each medium sized piece, a fifth of the recommended minimum intake.
Since 2008 I've been a contributing editor and writer for SHAPE magazine, and in 2009 I began blogging on Shape.com. What I love most about SHAPE is that the magazine is so inspiring. Yes, celebrities grace the covers, but every issue also features incredible success stories from real readers. I've long been a fan because the articles and advice are aspirational but attainable. I still can't wait to get my copy in the mail each month. My ritual is to make a cup of tea, curl up on my couch (with my kitty by my side) and read it cover to cover.
